Design/Build in the Winter?

The leaves are starting to drop and so are the temperatures around Kansas City.  Fall has come and is passing faster than most of us realize!   Before we all know it, winter will be upon us.  Winter is an interesting time for the landscape industry.  We have to be ready to shift gears into snow removal mode at the drop of a hat, but we still have to carry on with business as usual.

Business as usual brings up an interesting point.  The weather dictates what “business” we will be most involved in – snow removal or design/build and landscaping.  There is a common misconception about the winter months in the Kansas City area.  As long as there is not snow on the ground we will keep working as usual through the winter.  We will keep constructing our hardscaping elements and planting landscapes as long as the snow stays off the ground.

Winter can be beneficial for design/build projects because we can minimize damage to turf during the construction process.  The ground temperature is lower and keeps the surface harder – minimizing damage and rutting from our equipment.  Keep this in mind when deciding on your project timeline.  It is always nice to be able to enjoy your new project right away in the spring rather than wasting the best months of spring building your project.  We are scheduling now for December – just think of how nice it would be to have your new landscaping and patio finished for Christmas!
